For the longest time it has been ingrained in us that once we graduate from a premier institute, our life is settled. But is that the case in reality or are we simply going to with what’s been ingrained.

A lot of recruitment in India done by the HR fraternity continues to give more importance to the reputation of the institute as a basis to shortlist the candidate.

However, over the last 6+ months with Covid-19, times have changed. Gone are the days when a piece of paper/entrance exam decides your future for you.

Not doubting the credibility of anyone who has graduated from the top institutions in the country but the hard truth is that the value of a degree and the institute can no longer ensure a financially secure life, and we can see many such examples during COVID-19.

Candidates from premier institutes have also been laid off equally if not more whereas the demand for skill expertise has shot up incredibly, and a lot of full-time employees have moved to freelancing. The freelancers at all levels with depth in their skills are earning more than they could have earned in their full time jobs. Today discovering the best talent through internet is becoming faster and easier.

With everyone now having access to the world’s best teachers, courses online, anyone can up-skill themselves from the comfort of their homes. Would you want to study from one college where you may have 2 great teachers and 3 average ones and have to study some courses you may not enjoy or would you rather learn each course from the world’s best teachers or practical experts for each skill and learn only the skills you want to add for yourself. Today the choice is in your hands.

The competition is no longer on the degree but on the mastery of skills.

Worldwide, hiring is shifting towards the depth of knowledge and application of skills rather than the value of the graduated institute. General Management Jobs & Just Supervision seem to be fast disappearing to automation.

But the question remains, will HR in India still continue to hire the old-fashioned way or will it adapt to the change quickly? Hopefully we see a change for the good!
