Once Steve Jobs said, your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.

The modern troop of professionals have shown the bravado to do the great work. They have moved past ambiguity, broken the shackles of traditional jobs and pursued new roles and responsibilities to make ruckus.

But the pursuit of an exciting career has also created doubts among them and in my long, rewarding career as a Leadership  Career Coach, I have come across professionals who are just doing a job which came their way and are not working in a direction of  their career progression.

Confusion and dilemma from the young and aspiring ones are accepted but even the mid-level seniors and executives too dwell in doubts before planning a career transition. What stops them and how they can resolve this? Let’s explore possibilities.

Define your own career:

Most professionals run after fancy job titles and let those job keywords define their career. If you are looking for a successful and satisfying career, take the complete responsibility and contribute your skill, perseverance and commitment to architect your dream career.

Most individuals I met, they just stumbled upon the opportunity and embraced the job that came their way. The lack of planning is palpable in their struggle to cope up with the expectations and new responsibilities that increase after a certain time.

They do not put enough thoughts to acquire the required skills or dive deep inside the “do’s” and “don’ts” to convert the opportunity into a viable career. Inevitably, after a few months, they find themselves de-motivated to continue the work and struggle with the career.

So, while making a career transition, put efforts to understand the roles and responsibilities. Chalk out your strengths and weaknesses and better not to get carried away by the expectations of peers and industry trends.

Let your actions speak louder than thoughts:

Many mid-level seniors have issues with the boss, colleagues and company culture. They either complain about the same endlessly or opt for another  option to escape from the challenging circumstances. If you are facing the same predicament, my advice for you is to first   question yourself

Before making any quick decision, take a step back and think –

  • What steps have you taken to better the situation?
  • Have you been proactive to help your colleagues to get better at their jobs or create harmony across everyone?
  • Have you made any serious efforts to do work that’s meaningful and important to you?

If you are looking for external stimuli and changes, chances are, even in a new place, it will fade out real quick and you will be back to square one.

The smart ones take actions and work hard towards their dream career. The keyword here is action and not just wishful thinking. I wish you best of luck there!

In today’s world of opportunities, you have all the resources to craft a carer that you want. Career transition is an important decision. Make it a stepping stone towards growth and more success with a thoughtful decision and not a quick step to escape some challenges.

I have been fortunate enough to meet and help some wonderful talents and successful professionals to make a better career transition.
